identity formation- a poem

Identity Formation
Let's take the hurt
and hug them
hold them
and strip away
the harm that was done to them
let's take an eraser
and wipe out all the cruel words
emblazoned on their minds
hey don't deserve to wear that negative mind tattoo

A slowly forming child
you can imprint with your words
your actions
then they will harden
and stay marred for a long time

You fire them each time you say
those syllables
those mean letters
that glaze over them
and kill their self-esteem
with you as the sculptor

How are they supposed
to finish the building themselves
you are supposed to wedge the clay
smooth it out
and give the child the tools
it needs to construct a masterpiece
a solid foundation for their own identity
